For professionals doing Care Act assessments with people with learning disabilities

We co-created guidance to support social workers and other social care professionals to have conversations about sex and relationships support needs in Care Act assessments with people with learning disabilities and autistic people.

Care Act assessment guidance

We have created a guidance document for professionals undertaking Care Act assessments with people with learning disabilities. These documents were co-created with autistic people, people with learning disabilities, social workers including autistic social workers, and a commissioner. They include how to approach conversations in a way that meets the needs of the people you support.

Menu for Support Tool

This tool can be used to guide conversations in Care Act assessments. It lists the 10 eligibility criteria under the Care Act, including sex and relationships support needs. You can take these into Care Act assessments to support your conversations, or to work through with the people you support.

Supporting people with learning disabilities to prepare for their Care Act assessment

People with learning disabilities told us they often didn't know they were having a Care Act assessment because it was called a "conversation" or "chat. They also didn't know what needs they could speak about during Care Act assessments. We have created guidance and a menu tool for people with learning disabilities. We encourage you to help the people you support to prepare by providing them with these tools and guidance before their Care Act assessment.
