About Us

Principal Investigator
Dr Monique Huysamen
I am a Research Fellow at Manchester Met. My research focuses on gender, sexuality, intimacy, and sexual and reproductive health and justice. I am passionate about doing critical qualitative research into policy and practice which helps to support, recognise, and represent the intimate lives of neurodivergent and disabled people in all their diversity. I led the Supporting Autistic Adults’ Intimate Lives (SAAIL) research project which was funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

Principal Investigator
Dr Claire Bates
I am the founder and lead of the National Supported Loving Network, drawing on more than 20 years of frontline and strategic experience with Choice Support supporting people with learning disabilities. My work champions people’s rights to sexuality, intimacy and meaningful relationships, and I have developed a strong research programme to underpin this practice. I have collaborated with Manchester Metropolitan University and the Tizard Centre at the University of Kent, building evidence that informs national best practice and policy

Research Associate
Dr Georgia Rivers
I am a research associate at Manchester Met. My research interests are sexuality, LGBTQ+ health inequality, and sexual and reproductive health. I completed my PhD on cervical cancer screening for trans+ people in 2025, and I have previously undertaken research into how older people's sexual rights can be better supported in residential aged care.

Co-Investigator
Dr Sarah Pollock
I am a social worker who used to work with adults both in hospital and in their homes. Now I work at a university where I teach social work students, and conduct research. Most of my research is about social work and language – I work with social workers, interpreters and people who need support but don’t speak English and try to improve communication between them. I’m excited to be part of this project, because I think it’s important that social workers do everything they can, to make every part of people’s lives better – and this research will help us to do that

Professor Chris Hatton
I am a Professor of Social Care, working with at Manchester Metropolitan University. I am mainly involved in research with people with learning disabilities to document and understand the inequalities that people face, and to work with people trying to make a difference.

Research Assistant
Anna-Marie Kiely
I am a Social Worker with over 20 years experience in adult social care and a parent carer of an autistic child with complex needs. I'm interested in how intimacy and relationships shape wellbeing, particularly for autistic and neurodivergent people, and in how statutory assessment can better recognise intimacy as part of everyday practice. I'm committed to improving support for carers, with a particular focus on addressing parent-carer burnout, and combines professional experience and lived insight with a strong belief in research-informed practice that can make a meaningful difference in frontline services.
